Designed by Walker Warner Architects, this sustainable beach house is perched on the edge of Makena Beach, one of the most popular shorelines in Maui, Hawaii. Maximizing natural light, this two-story dwelling soaks in the breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean through expansive windows and terraces.  

Encompassing 9,007 square feet of living space, this contemporary home was designed to balance openness with privacy. Interior finishes include Calcutta marble in the bathrooms, imported solid marble vanities, bleached cypress paneling, and beams along with reclaimed teak flooring and decking to connect the interiors to the surrounding landscape.

The street side of the dwelling appears modest in scale, a single-story structure defined by a board-formed concrete wall that wraps around the courtyard. Behind the solidity of the front facade, a full two-story program is revealed, lightly constructed of glass and steel, opening the living spaces and bedrooms to a vast seascape.

To shelter against intense sunlight and tropical storms, generous ten-foot roof overhangs, and sliding screens offer an effective and elegant response to protect from the harsh coastal environment. Draped from the roof are two copper mesh rain screens that direct rainwater runoff.

The exterior finishes feature board form concrete walls of varying depths and widths that wrap around the courtyard and swimming pool. Sustainable design strategies help this home harness the natural elements and have garnered it a LEED Silver certification.

What We Love: This sustainable beach house is elegantly proportioned with a fabulous mix of materials and thoughtful details that bring texture and warmth throughout. The dwelling beautifully melds into its site, soaking in the magnificent views of a breathtaking coastline. The architects did a fantastic job of seamlessly integrating the sustainable design strategies into this project, creating a thoughtful home for family living.

The owners did not wish to detract from the fabulous surroundings, so they requested to not overly furnish the home.

The Hawaiian ocean breeze flows through the large sliding glass doors, assisted by ceiling fans to maximize natural ventilation and minimize energy use.
