This classic American farmhouse is the home of interior designer Jessica Helgerson along with her husband, architect Yianni Doulis, and their two children. The home is nestled on a five-acre property on Sauvie Island, the largest island along the Columbia River and approximately 10 miles north of Portland, Oregon.
When the family first settled onto this property, they had initially renovated a tiny 540 square foot home, which they resided in for four years. We have featured this home here, Compact family home on Sauvie Island features a clever layout.
The couple worked closely together on the design, determining that the perfect home for the surroundings was a simple, classic American farmhouse. They did, however, have another (slightly more eccentric) narrative that informed their design decisions. The design duo opted to give the house a guiding anthropomorphic personality.
Here is how they derived their project narrative in their own words, “We decided she was an elderly spinster aunt. Uptight. Very thin. Always dressed in high-necked, starched, long linen dresses. A little forbidding. This aunt dies and you are going through her affairs. You find a collection of beautiful silk lingerie and bundles of letters from a Moroccan lover. We never named her, but she’s the spirit of Wild Goose Farmhouse.”
What We Love: We are always in awe of Jessica Helgerson’s work, her talent and delightful personality is on full display in her personal family home. This classic American farmhouse offers inviting warmth for family living, from the built-ins to the shelves full of books. We are especially loving the charming conservatory, a lovely place to enjoy morning breakfast and be surrounded by the beauty of nature.
