This 1930s Colonial Revival house, nested in the hills of a 300-acre property in Northwestern Connecticut, was beautifully transformed by Schafer Buccellato Architects. This residence was initially intended to be just a brief stopping point for the homeowners. They purchased the large farm adjacent to the property and planned to live here only while constructing a larger weekend country house on the site.
However, as is often the case with old houses, the owners soon fell in love with the charm and quirks of this stunning Colonial Revival. The architect’s intensive restoration involved taking the home down to the studs. They salvaged as much of the original as possible and put it back together, keeping true to the original residence while making contemporary enhancements.
The architect devised two distinct entry terraces, reconfigured some of the interior spaces to meet the owners’ daily needs, and added windows and French doors to bring in natural light while framing views of the lush gardens beyond. The homeowners have a passion for travel, so collections of objects, textiles, and furnishings can be seen on display throughout the interiors.
Above: The exceptional doorknocker, which perfectly suits the house, was picked up by the homeowners on one of their many trips to Asia. It adds the perfect, personal touch to this home, inviting you inside.
What We Love: This Colonial Revival house provides a beautifully transformed home for the owners to showcase their collected pieces from world travels, personalizing their home. We love how the architects brought the charm and character back into this home, completely restoring it to its former glory. It now offers a warm and inviting living space for daily living and entertaining while meeting the lifestyle needs of its inhabitants.

Over time, the residence had become disconnected from the sprawling landscape, so the architects designed a series of garden rooms that connect to various entry points around the home. This helped to bring a sense of nature throughout. A charming detail on the property is the man-made swimming pond, which is fed by a nearby stream.
