A modern yet inviting farmhouse-style abode in the beautiful New York suburbs

Alisberg Parker together with Cum Laude Group has created this modern farmhouse-style residence situated in Scarsdale, a suburban town in Westchester County, New York. Constructed in the early 1900s, this dwelling has undergone numerous additions and renovations and necessitated a new master plan.

The floorplan was fragmented and the rooms dark and closed off from the rear yard – certainly not fitting for a family that loves to entertain and has three active boys. The owners requested that the interior of the home be a modern interpretation of the mid-century modern style, while the exterior should transform the tired colonial look and express it more like a modern farmhouse.

Approach: The original staircase divided the home both from front to back and side to side. By relocating it, the home’s circulation improved dramatically and offered view corridors to the outdoors and for the family’s art collection. By removing the walls between the kitchen and family room, and building a small addition, a central gathering space was created for the whole family.

Results: With the kitchen and eating area now open to the family room, with its new floor-to-ceiling windows and doors, this home has transformed from disjointed and dark to open and airy. White oak and walnut bring warmth to the minimalist spaces, accented by brass and stainless steel, while the black windows frame the views to the new pool terrace shaded by a cedar trellis.
