Designed to interact with its surrounding environment, this fabulous modern home designed by Eric Olsen Designย isย locatedย in the community of Spyglass Hill, in Corona del Mar, California. Built by KRS Development, this spectacular dwelling isย nestled on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The interiors reflect a strikingly modern yet comfortable living space that is very welcoming for its inhabitants. The homeowners are a family with three children, who had spotted this idyllic property in Spyglass Hill and fell in love with the area. The home itself was in need of a major update, as the rooms were very compartmentalized and lacked an indoor-outdoor connection. They had originally considered doing a remodel of the existing home, however, base on their vision, its seemed to be smarter to tear down and start over.
With a fresh, clean slate, the clients requested to have a fluid floor plan to entertain their close-knit family. The idea was to create simple architecture that reflected crisp, clean lines. Spaces where family could congregate and cook, eat dinner or watch television together. If the surrounding environment is calm, then the view could be much better appreciated. The architect maximizedย spaces throughout to take full advantage of the views. Aย seamless indoor-outdoor connection was created through an expansive sliding glass wall in the great room. The living, dining and kitchen area are fully integrated with the backyard terrace and beyond to the Pacific Ocean. The master bedroom also has a generous-sized glass door to mimic this effect.
The front of the house features an inviting entrance courtyard with spaces for entertaining and play. When you walk inside the home, you can see right through to the backyard. The back terrace is more long and narrow, primarily serving as a space to soak in the captivating ocean views.
The interior scheme offers clean lines and organic materials, yet not perfectly polished since the home needed to be kid-friendly. With angular and modern forms, warm textures needed to be infused into the spaces to soften them. Skylights in the entryway, kitchen and dining area were crossed over with reclaimed oak ceiling beams. This enhanced the feeling of warmth and texture into the main living spaces. Furnishings are a mixture of modernist classics and custom designed pieces by the architect. Some of the pieces are a touch rustic, making the space feel more livable.
The architect, who also was tasked with the interior design scheme, opted for a muted color palette throughout most of the interiors. Not only does it evoke a feeling of serenity, but it helps to not draw the attention away from the incredible view through the extensive glazing throughout the interiors. The exception was the one of the shared children’s bedrooms, which was infused with vibrant hues and a touch of whimsy.
What We Love: This fabulous modern home in Spyglass Hill is not only a dream house for its inhabitants, but also for the architect who took great pride in his work. He has created a livable space for a family to enjoy quality time together, enriching their lives and making them happy. The custom furniture pieces demonstrate excellent craftsmanship and really adds to the quality of this beautiful home. We love all of the detail work that has gone into making this house a home… and the ocean views are not too shabby either!

Above: The exterior facade features modernist walls of white burnished stucco. Warmth was infused into the facade with the cedar shingle roof, as well as cedar siding applied to the garage doors and the room above the garage. The loft space above the garage provides a cool lounge area for the children to play. It is also the only second level area of this otherwise single-level volume.
