A loft-inspired bachelor pad has amazing views on the Seattle waterfront

modern-waterfront-home-exterior

This waterfront bachelor pad was designed by Heliotrope Architects, tucked into a small urban property along Portage Bay, a neighborhood in Seattle, Washington. The dwelling was created to live like a studio loft for a bachelor who appreciates privacy. Centrally located in the city and sitting directly on the water, the dock provides a convenient spot to park a float plane.

Concealed from the street, the 2,500 square foot structure is a protective shell of zinc and aluminum โ€“ a refined version of the maritime industrial sheds found throughout the waterfronts of Seattle.

Water-side, the dwelling becomes more transparent, with prospect-views over the houseboats of Portage Bay, the University of Washington, and the Cascade Mountains. Living, cooking, and sleeping all occur in one volume distributed over two-floor levels, sized and shaped to envelop the occupant in a protective refuge.

An interior palette of cedar, walnut, flagstone, blackened steel, and marble stands in contrast to the machine-like character of the exterior.

What We Love: This waterfront bachelor pad offers a sleek and sophisticated home for its owner to enjoy living and entertaining. Large windows frame spectacular waterfront views while bathing the interiors with natural light. The heavy use of wood brings warmth into this otherwise modern dwelling, making it feel comfortable and inviting. We are especially loving the large outdoor patio and the dock for a float plane!

Site constraints, and the modest needs of a bachelor, generated a one-bedroom residence smaller in size and lower in height than the house it replaced.
