This modern lakeside home, designed by MU Architecture, in collaboration with Anik Patry Architect, is surrounded by forest in La Conception, a charming village nestled in the Laurentian Mountains of Quebec, Canada. Offering complete seclusion, this backcountry refuge is set within a dramatic mountain landscape at the most pristine end of Lake Xavier. It opens onto protected land, ensuring uninterrupted views for many years to come.

Encompassing 6,900 square feet of living space, The Albatross embodies a new vision of contemporary living, designed for a modern family where every space invites connection and keeps people at the heart of the experience.

With nearly 5,000 hours devoted to its meticulous design, the home is deeply rooted in its setting, embedded into a steep forested hillside with cantilevered volumes extending outward toward sweeping lake views.

Along the shoreline, existing vegetation is carefully preserved, wrapping the home in greenery and amplifying its intimate, tucked-away presence in the landscape. The site’s steep topography called for a highly considered approach to placement and circulation.

With an ambitious program in mind, the architects deliberately avoided a single, monolithic volume. Instead, they composed a series of articulated forms that follow the terrain and honour the natural setting. The result reduces visual impact, preserves the site’s integrity, and creates a residence in quiet dialogue with its surroundings.

A striking first impression, the residence greets visitors with an intentionally fragmented silhouette. Its understated façades offer a quiet sense of humility, withholding the project’s true scale until the last moment. With a retro-futuristic vocabulary, the architecture taps into an aesthetic that feels at once forward-looking and oddly familiar.

A Welcoming Entry That Sets the Tone

As the residence reveals itself gradually, staging a true sense of discovery. A fluid architectural sequence guides visitors effortlessly, unveiling spaces one by one in a clear, intuitive rhythm.

Open-Plan Living With Serene Forest Views

Open-plan living room with three-sided fireplace, sectional sofa, wood ceiling, and floor-to-ceiling forest views

Inspired by the Albatross, an emblem of travel and freedom, this home expresses an architecture of lightness, connecting sky, land and water. Its bold cantilevers extend like wings in mid-flight, elevating the residence and framing a cinematic dialogue with the lakeside horizon. Opening wide to the panorama, the home’s raised terraces heighten the sensation of hovering, balanced between ground and air, so the architecture lands on the site with elegance, never with force.

Composed of interlocking volumes and layered rooflines the architecture creates a rich spatial cadence while maintaining a human scale. The white wood cladding brings a luminous clarity to the ensemble, amplifying its sense of weightlessness. With its subtle nautical character, the residence blends seamlessly into the winter landscape, becoming almost one with its surroundings.

From the outset, the project is guided by a simple idea: to create a home that feels welcoming, adaptable and generous. The entry sets the tone, opening onto a spacious arrival zone directly connected to the double garage and an oversized sports-oriented mudroom, complete with a counter and integrated sink. Together, these first spaces form a clear, cohesive sequence that naturally leads into the main living areas.

The main level then unfolds as a bright, continuous sequence. An open, inviting living room extends to a sunrise-facing terrace, perfect for taking in the stillness of the morning. The dining room comfortably seats twelve, while the kitchen becomes a true social hub, anchored by two striking, irregularly shaped islands and paired with a fully equipped service kitchen.

With such a rich, layered program, the challenge is to find the right form, one that honours the site without overbuilding. Staying true to its philosophy, the architect shaped the design around continuous spatial optimization, ensuring that every square foot is purposeful, effortless and deeply lived-in.
