Designed by Eerkes Architects, the Surly Crab is a modern waterfront home that appears to float just steps above the oyster‑shell‑strewn shoreline of Hood Canal, neslted on 10-acre, lushly forested site in Seabeck, Washington. Its main floor is suspended from a monolithic concrete fireplace that anchors the home to the land, lifting the main level above the beach.
Beneath this elevated floor, the outdoor fireplace and covered seating area, family room, water‑sports storage, and the home’s namesake speakeasy, the Surly Crab, sit nestled among beach grass and driftwood. Above them, the main level gathers the primary social spaces, where the living, dining, and kitchen areas are framed by expansive views of Hood Canal and the Olympic Mountains, with their fjord‑like valleys beyond.

Set back into the forest, the upper level which contains the owner’s bedroom suite along with the guest suites, which are conceived as modern tree houses. Perched above the revegetated forest floor, these rooms offer not only sweeping views to the west but also more intimate experiences of the forest canopy and the comings and goings of its inhabitants.

What We Love About This Home
We love the mix of rugged and refined materials in this modern waterfront home, which is inspired by its natural setting. The seamless indoor-outdoor connection, from the floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors to the cantilevered deck and floating soaking tub, makes the surrounding forest and Hood Canal feel like extensions of the living space. The hidden speakeasy tucked beneath the main floor is the kind of detail that turns a beautiful house into an unforgettable home.
Tell Us: Which space speaks to you most — the kitchen with its dramatic blackened-steel backdrop and waterfront views, or the tree-house-inspired bedroom suite nestled in the forest canopy?

Crafted by Magraw Zecha, the stained rift-cut white oak cabinetry brings warmth to the space, with select cabinet fronts clad in blackened steel by Ryan Landworth for visual contrast. At the sink, the Corsano faucet was sourced from California Faucets.

A professional-grade Wolf range anchors the cooking area, while a wool-and-silk runner from Driscoll Robbins adds warmth and texture underfoot.
Indoor-Outdoor Living on the Cantilevered Deck

The chair cushions are upholstered in durable Larsen fabric. A floor-to-ceiling glass door by Fleetwood Windows & Doors creates a seamless connection between the indoor and outdoor living spaces.

Owner’s Suite Designed Like a Modern Tree House

Above: This serene owner’s bedroom suite features a bed dressed in a Libeco Home coverlet, a Matouk cashmere blanket, and a lumbar pillow from Trammell-Gagné. At the foot of the bed, an Anees Furniture & Design bench is custom upholstered with a Romo fabric. Grounding this space is an area rug by Stark. Overhead, a sleek Minka-Aire ceiling fan.

Above: In the owner’s bathroom, a Cascade Architectural chain-mail curtain visually divides the space, separating the Victoria + Albert tub from a custom vanity by Magraw Zecha, topped with an MTI Baths countertop with integrated sinks. The Sento faucets are by Graff. On the wall, the custom mirrors are flanked by Sonneman sconces. In the middle of the countertop is a sculptural accent from Soho Home.

A cantilevered shower and soaking tub create an al fresco, arboreal bathing experience: glass doors on two sides retract to evoke the sensation of floating among the trees.
