David Charlez Designs and Nor Son Custom Homes have designed this beautiful transitional-style getaway home nestled along Lake Minnetonka in Shorewood, Minnesota. The homeowner’s vision for their new lake house was to create relaxing living spaces for their friends and family. The outdoor spaces were equally important to the owners as the indoor areas.
Loving the minimalist and Zen style, they wanted to use timeless and quality materials and have the design speak to the group. It was important that the whole space felt open and airy, yet it also allowed for unique spaces that felt connected. This spectacular residence boasts 5,700 square feet of living space with four bedrooms and four bathrooms. There are also 2,300 square feet of outdoor patio, decks, and balconies.

Highlights: An incredible glass music room, spacious bunk room, sunroom, screen porch, floor-to-ceiling windows, covered deck, deck, grill patio, owner’s suite balcony, upper-level office with sky deck and views of Lake Minnetonka, and an upper-level exercise room.
Above: The homeowners desired open, interconnected living spaces that would feel distant. Achieving this, varying ceiling heights and a sequence of interior limestone columns elegantly delineate each space.

When designing this home, it was important to maximize the serene blufftop vistas. The project team was challenged with a difficult site — a narrow property with a steep rise from the street on one side and a steep drop to the lake on the other.

Despite major restrictions on lakeshore setbacks and hardcover limits, the landscape architects got creative to craft beautiful entertaining spaces within the buildable area. The sunken entertaining space perfectly aligns with the lakeshore setback boundary, maximizing every inch of usable space. This area includes grass for lawn games, a patio, a fire pit, and a hot tub (underneath the upper-level deck).
Above: The lower level features a full walk-out, boasting floor-to-ceiling glazing to keep the interiors feeling light and airy.
