Striking contemporary home offers dramatic California skyline views

Aย contemporary property designed by Terry & Terry Architectureย isย nestled on top of theย Eastbay mountain rangeย overlooking the city of Oakland, California. The site offers unparalleled views of the southwest Bay and Golden Gate Bridge. The scope of the project consisted of rebuilding an existing post fire-storm house.

Designed for a young family, they requested an open layout floorplan that maximizes the views of the bay. The design also needed to have a strong indoor-outdoor connection to the existing garden.ย The site features matureย redwood trees on either side of the property, therefore focusing ones visual perspective from the front gardens to the views at the back of the property.

“The design consists of shrouding the open common space in a wood tube that connects the garden in the front to the viewing deck off the living space at the rear. The roof of the tube form is warped out creating a large volume for the living space that echoes the contours of the hillside it resides on,” states the architects.

“The main living space becomes the connector of the two contrasting outdoor spaces.ย Working with the existing floor plan we transformed the kitchen area to open out and connect to the front yard garden and create an outdoor dining area. A concrete planter/bench was placed to define the outdoor dining space.”

Adjacent to a newly renovated kitchen is the interior dining space, which seamlesslyย extendsย out to the viewing deck, creating one large open space.

A new staircases connects the main level with the lower level, which continues the wood tube down through a crevasse to a media/projection room, bedroomย and office area.

What We Love: This contemporary property offers clean lines and a crisp design aesthetic. Despite the more minimal look, the home has added warmth thanks to the heavy use of wood throughout. The views from both inside and outside the home are nothing short of breathtaking. We especially love the viewing deck!… Readers, what is your favorite feature of the design of this home?

I love the wood, but not on the interior floors. I would have used concrete downstairs and large format tile with a concrete appearance upstairs. The ceilings are phenomenal in my opinion.

it’s hard to get a feel for the overall house design from these photos, but with wood on the floor, wood in the ceiling and wood on the wall, i would say that they might have overdone it just a bit with the wood theme. i kind of like the curved ceiling concept, especially with the way in which they worked the skylights (or roof windows, i can’t tell which is installed there) in a manner that maximizes the light dispersion from the skylights/roof windows into the interior space below.
