Rehkamp Larson Architects in collaboration with Lifespace Construction is responsible for this renovated modern farmhouse nestled on an old farmstead in Lake Elmo, a city in Washington County, Minnesota. The owners wished to completely remodel the home to offer comfortable living spaces with a modern edge that celebrates the panoramic views of the rural site. A vintage white barn served as inspiration for the beautiful exterior material palette.
The traditional gable form is paired with a corner window, accenting the steel structure of the staircase within. A classic wraparound porch on the south and west-facing facades provide shelter to the living roomโs three sides of floor-to-ceiling glass. A covered walkway connects the house to the three-season porch and forms a courtyard centered on the existing swimming pool. The kitchen opens up to this outdoor room, which is idyllic for intimate gatherings or entertaining a crowd.
Unexpected pops of color and materials can be found throughout this renovated modern farmhouse. This includes polished concrete floors mixed with timber headers and whitewashed wood wallboards. Hints of red complement white oak and fresh blue cabinetry in the kitchen.
Reclaimed wood collected from around the property was incorporated into the fireplace mantel and barn doors. An old metal Butler grain bin door was repurposed in the refinished basement. Living spaces are defined but open, enabling long views through the house that frame the surrounding pond, outbuildings and fields.
What We Love: This renovated modern farmhouse features newly designed living spaces with great attention to detail throughout. A gorgeous exterior facade welcomes guests inside, while a wrap-around porch provides shelter to enjoy the idyllic views that surround this incredible farmhouse. We are loving the fresh pops of color mixed with subdued neutrals to provide a relaxing and harmonious living environment.
