This spectacular contemporary mountain home was designed by Carney Logan Burke Architects, located on a butte in Jackson, Wyoming. Nestled on a sprawling 38-acre property, the site features a main residence and an artist studio. This magnificent site boasts sweeping views over the confluence of the Snake and Gros Ventre Rivers, which commanding uninterrupted vistas of the Teton Mountains and National Parks.
The goal was to devise a site plan that would maximize the potential of this property, while melding the structures into the landscape, yet still maintain a modest profile on the skyline. The homeowner is a collector of contemporary art and sculpture. So it was their expressed wishes for the architecture to reflect character and materiality that respects western tradition, while embracing abstract, clean, light-filled spaces.
The architects organized the program into a series of volumes, which ranges across the site. You will find that each space opens to various views and access points—ranging from dramatic, panoramic views to more intimate experiences within the trees.
Subtly curving roof forms helps to separately capture public and private functions within the residential layout. Rising from and returning to the landscape, the roof profile traces the soft shape of the butte, while creating a series of protective canopies that offers shelter in the harsh western landscape.
