Alexander Design Group, in partnership with John Kraemer & Sons, designed this modern Lake Minnetonka house mere steps away from the dynamic downtown Wayzata, Minnesota. Nestled along the picturesque shores of Wayzata Bay, this home boasts breathtaking lakefront views through expansive windows provided by Loewen Windows.
Encompassing 5,600 square feet of living space, the goal of this project was to create a modern, cozy, and timeless home. The project team created a house that would appear see-through, with sleek lines and large expanses of glazing. Triple-pane windows and sliding doors were chosen for their efficiency and sound barriers to withstand long, harsh winters and the liveliness of downtown. The result is a house that is attractive yet high-performance for longer-lasting efficiency.

Above: The exterior facade features stained cedar siding and a pitched standing seam metal roof, providing a fresh take on modern Minnesota architecture.
The designer employed a mix of natural materials that helped to balance the industrial elements with the cozy layers that the owners desired. Throughout the interiors, you will find white oak, offering all the warmth of wood but without feeling heavy. It also helps to offset the industrial features in this home, which include the exposed steel beams and cable rail staircase.
The designer selected metal wire light fixtures throughout the main living spaces to create an airy atmosphere with a hint of drama.
Touches of pattern, color, and texture can be found throughout the open and airy floor plan. In the living room, one side boasts sweeping views of the lake, while the other features a linear fireplace of blackened steel. Above the built-ins, vertical stained wood slats rise up to meet a glass-and-limestone focal wall.

A clever design solution in this space is the counter-height table affixed to the island, which can play double-duty as a buffet. The upper level features three guest rooms, a home office, and an inviting living area that flows out to the main deck. The exterior material palette mimics the interior.

Above: This upper balcony offers a destination only accessible via a spiral staircase or an interior elevator. It provides comfortable seating areas, amenities such as a beverage fridge, and spectacular views over the lake.
Above: Limestone was used on the exterior facade, adding a warm and organic feel to the dwelling. It also connects the deck to the terrace below, where a swimming pool and spa are located.
