Hidden in the stunning wilderness of Patagonia, Chile, the Pollux Refuge is a private retreat created for relaxation and outdoor adventures. Designed by Rubén Rivera Peede, it is located on a narrow 200 x 30-meter plot near the pristine shores of Lake Pollux. This rural getaway is located southeast of Coyhaique City. Built as a getaway for family get-togethers, weekend trips, and fishing expeditions, the refuge offers a picturesque view. With a lake loaded with species such as Rainbow Trout, fishing is one of the highlights of Pollux Refuge. This only adds to the charm of this peaceful location.
The architectural layout carefully blends the natural landscape with its rural location. Pollux Refuge is thoughtfully located between a thick lenga forest and the lake, creating an impressive transition forest terrain and crystal clear water. As visitors wind through the towering trees, they are treated to a view of the structure and the peaceful lake as they appear in the clearing ahead.
Above: The building is elevated slightly off the ground to minimize its environmental impact. Natural weathering has enhanced the character of the raw lenga wood, which is sourced from local sawmills. The structure’s facade fits perfectly with its surroundings, offering privacy while providing stunning views of the open lake.

What We Love: This lakeside refuge showcases the essence of Patagonia’s stunning beauty while maintaining a thoughtful ecological footprint. The refuge feels like part of the landscape due to the raw lenga wood and the structure’s position to maximize privacy and panoramic views. These features allow guests to lose themselves in nature while taking advantage of the modern comforts provided.

Inside, the refuge is a careful blend of nature and comfort. The open-plan living space is designed for an easy indoor-outdoor lifestyle. Boundaries between the interior and natural exterior are minimal. The airy, sloped ceiling shows off the exposed lenga beams, while generous windows provide natural light and stunning views of the forest beyond.
Above: The private quarters are more cozy, featuring a long horizontal window that draws viewers into the forest beyond. The sliding and folding walls allow for more space by expanding the bedrooms into the communal areas. This adaptability offers a sense of togetherness as well as solitude.

The sturdy metal framework of the structure is anchored to the deep concrete foundations. This foundation supports the refuge, which is made from SIP panels and wood. Durable and sustainable, this construction allows the refuge to live side by side with the pristine surroundings and offers a warm, welcoming retreat.
