Dreamy mid-century modern home breathes new life in Lake Tahoe

Lot C Architecture was responsible for the remodel of this beautiful 1970s mid-century home located on the north shore of Lake Tahoe, California. The home is nestled on a half-acre, adjacent to the Incline Village Championship Golf Course. When the owners decided to sell their home, which was originally designed by renowned architect Cliff May, a Bay Area couple jumped at the opportunity. This would be their full-time residence and they knew they had not just found a house, but a home. The family of five wanted their home to emphasize the area’s beautiful natural surroundings, but in non-traditional Tahoe way.

Requiring a lot of work, the homeowners still fell in love with the mid-century style of architectureย โ€” open spaces and connection to the outdoors. They were committed to modernizing the home, yet preserving the Cliff May vision. Contracting builderย Mark Tanner Construction, the home was completely renovated. The project team integrated as muchย salvaged and repurposed material as possible in the overall design.ย An additionalย 200-square-foot was integrated into the 3,000 square foot designย โ€” made cohesive with the existing exterior and roofline.

What We Love: This fabulous home was infused with mid-century style, walnut cabinetry, sleek lines and plenty of glass. Although protecting the original design was important, there was also a focus on creating a kid-friendly environment, which was pulled off beautifully. Expanding and slightly reconfiguring the layout to accommodate an additional bedroom, the design team did an amazing job of working mainly in the confines of the original footprint. We are also loving theย impressive vaulted ceiling in the living room, which is 27-feet high!

Readers, please share with us in the Comments what you think of this Lake Tahoe home. Are there any details you would like to have seen done differently?ย

Post and beam construction was used in this space to support the vaulted ceiling. A narrow skylight runs along the ridge of the ceiling. Sliding glass doors leads out to a wrap-around deck, blurring the lines between indoors and out.

Flanking the fireplace are built-in niches to display family photos and collectibles. Above the fireplace is a cleverly concealed, drop-down television.

Above: The custom cabinetry in the kitchen is all walnut, while the countertops areย Caesarstone quartz. The backsplashย was installed by Amazing Tile & Stone. Originally the kitchen was small and cramped, where a wall separated it from the dining room. After the wall was torn down, the space offers excellent circulation and plenty of natural light. A pantry was cleverlyย punched out onto the deck.

Above: The master bedroom is located on the ground level, away from the main living spaces. This room originally had dropped ceilings, which were removed to expose a beautiful wood-beamed ceiling. The fireplace was given a facelift, featuring aย hot-rolled steel surround. The television was recessed into the wall above. Sliding glass doors provides private access out to the wrap-around deck, a hot tub and beyond to the forest.

Above: The master bathroom was completely revamped, highlighting sliding barn door style mirrors with medicine cabinets concealed behind them. There are two kids bedrooms just beyond the master suite, that are accessed down a short set of steps. This area of the house was expanded to accommodate an additional bedroom, which originally only had one. The two bedrooms share a fully renovated bathroom.

Above: In the mudroom, the original dropped ceiling were removed to allow for locker storage for the family’s outdoor gear. The custom designed lockersย โ€”composed of walnutย โ€” are fronted with wire-mesh to allow for proper ventilation. The basalt tiles on the floor are very durable.

Above: The project team added a section of clear-stained cedar siding to the exterior facade. This was set perpendicular to the cool gray-painted board and batten siding that was original to the home. In classic ranch style, a deep overhang provides shelter to a modest front porch with pavers set in aย Versaille pattern. A wood and glass panel door sourced fromย High Sierra Custom Doorย floods the front entryway with natural light.

The patio and sprawling walkways feature arched bridges andย original Asian decorative statues. There is also a natural creek on this property.
