Off-the-grid guest house beckons on the Santa Barbara coast

off-grid-modern-guest-house-exterior

This minimalist, modern guest house was designed by Anacapa Architecture in collaboration with Jessica Helgerson Interior Design. The home is nestled into an isolated hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean, just north of Santa Barbara. The homeowner’s objective was to preserve and protect the natural environment of their property. To do so required that the home fit discretely into the landscape.

The project team concentrated on creating an environmentally-friendly, low-impact design and construction. The guest house features two board-formed concrete structures, partially bermed into the hillside, while opening towards the ocean. A rooftop garden is planted with native grasses. The material palette is simple and restrained, made entirely of sustainable building products: concrete, steel, glass and walnut.

The home is designed to be completely self-sufficient. This “off-grid” property features its own sewage treatment, on-site water supply and a rooftop photovoltaic system. Jessica Helgerson Interior Design worked on the interiors of this project, furnishing the home with textures and accessories that adds character and warmth. An earthy palette of leather, wood, brass, and handwoven textiles creates an overall inviting atmosphere.

What We Love: This modern guest house was created to entertain family and friends in style, to enjoy weekends of  hiking, surfing, and horseback riding… would love to be a guest here! The addition of the green roof helps the structure to disappear into the site, while showcasing jaw-dropping ocean vistas. We love how this home melds into the setting, with minimal impact to the property. Overall a beautiful design—both indoors and out… Readers, what do you think of the overall design, please share your thoughts in the Comments!

Is there anyway that we could rent out the house for a period of time? We are very interested in building such a house and would like to know what it is like.
