This beautiful farmhouse was designed by Sellars Lathrop Architects, located in the Greens Farms neighborhood of Westport, Connecticut. The homeowners are a young professional couple who relocated from Brooklyn, New York, looking for a slower paced lifestyle. The area was established in 1648, where it once flourished with onion farms. It is the town’s most historic neighborhood, brimming with unique homes with a storied past.
The architects stated the following about the home: “The owners purchased this circa 1832 farmhouse with the goal of modernizing it, while still maintaining the historical character of the exterior. This classic, 4,900 square foot farmhouse had been enlarged and renovated over the years, but the rooms and interior aesthetic were characterless and outdated. There was little or no insulation, leaky windows and doors, dark cabinets, outdated lighting and sinking floors.”
Above: In the kitchen, the cabinets are painted Benjamin Moore’s White Dove, while the flooring is character grade white oak.
The goal was to create a warm and inviting farmhouse aesthetic while improving circulation flow, natural light and views. Walls were torn downย or relocated and a new first floor addition provides a breakfast room adjacent to a brand new white kitchen, with a new stair access to the garage below. Rustic ceiling beams and white painted paneling were added throughout.
A new second storyย addition offers views of the backyard. It offers a spacious new master bedroom suite.ย The main part of original house was completely stripped to down to the studs, then structurally shored and insulated with spray foam to improve thermal efficiency. All new highly insulated windows, doors and skylights were alsoย integrated into the design.
What We Love: This inviting farmhouse showcases a bright and stylish new design aesthetic throughout. Expansive windows helping to blur the boundaries between indoors and out. The bright white walls helps to keep an open and airy feeling, while pops of color adds personality to the spaces.

“The exterior addition, as seen from the road, take cues from the adjacent roof lines and windows. They are are meant to appear as if they had always been there. The rear additions and renovations include a simple gable roof looking over a trellised patio, plus large expanses of windows and doors, allowing the owners a more modern indoor/ outdoor type lifestyle,” states the architects.
