This modern rustic retreat accentuates a spectacular Wyoming landscape

This sensational modern rustic retreat was designed by architectural studio Hoedemaker Pfeiffer, nestled on a sprawling 160 acres in Jackson, Wyoming. The homeowners love to fly fish and this desirable property has a river running through it. When designing this dwelling, the architect’s goal was to center the house around the couple’s fishing experience, orientating them to the land, and getting them outdoors as much as possible.

By nestling low into the site, the dwelling is not visible from most locations outside the property. A large roof gathers a series of spaces under it that range from the very intimate spaces for winter and nighttime gatherings to the open screened-in porch designed to take advantage of the low evening light.

This project provided a challenge that was site-specific — the views were above the house in the mountains that surrounded it and there was no front or back. In searching the property for a suitable building site there was little to differentiate much of it. However, a large round haybale provided just the tool needed to find the spot.

The height of the hay was equivalent to the height above the current grade the house would need to be to avoid spring floods. So centering on the bale the project team excavated enough earth to both lift the house and create a small lake that has become part of the river ecosystem.

The aesthetics of the interiors was inspired by the surrounding landscape. While the architects did not wish to make the space look cliché, they also wanted the great room to remind its inhabitants that they were in a beautiful, wild, Wyoming valley. A graphic, native influence wool rug spans the floor, paired with deep, comfortable upholstery wrapped in durable yet soft textiles.

Open to the great room, the kitchen is the heart of this home. The custom cabinetry features a gorgeous deep blue tone, while the soapstone countertops, blackened steel hood, and dark bronze hardware anchor this moody space. It becomes surprisingly bright during the day as light floods in from both sides of the kitchen.

The back pantry is compact and efficient, providing storage for overflow tabletop, specialty bakeware, and cleaning supplies.

While there are endless activities in the valley during the summertime, the wintertime is a bit quieter. With that in mind, the architects designed a game nook at the back of the great room that has three walls of shelving for books and games aplenty.

Custom striped cushions wrap the nook, while throw blankets can be found nearby, providing a restful escape from the great outdoors. There are also pocket doors that enable the space to be closed off from the rest of the home in case games get a bit rowdy and competitive.

Comfort and views were imperative for the homeowners in all bedrooms. There are deep, french-mattress-style cushions set in the window seats in both of these spaces, offering a cozy spot for reading or a nap, with the opportunity to soak in views of the mountainous terrain. The custom beds feature upholstered headboards and plush linens, encouraging those who come to stay awhile.

A large, white oak double vanity spans the wall in the owner’s bathroom, paired with horizontally paneled walls and a freestanding bathtub. The light and airy feel of the bathroom falls in contrast to the shower, which has deep blue tile and speaks to the kitchen palette.

Last I checked, 160 acres in Jackson rural will run you around $40M. It’s become the playground of oligarchs and Wall Street financial managers. Welcome to the real power in America — Chicago School neo-liberal greed runs our lives, and will be the downfall of our nation.
