Mackin Architects has completely reimagined this striking modern lake house built on a rocky peninsula in a bucolic, woodland setting in Westchester County, New York. The residence was originally designed by Architect Ken Miller in 1971 as the weekend retreat of actors Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn.
The home had been renovated numerous times and had subsequently fallen into disrepair. The new owners of the property commissioned the architects to design a modern residence where the 1970s contemporary home existed. They envisioned bright spaces opening the house to connect to the natural environment to realize the owner’s dream.

Given its location and current wetland restrictions, it is in fact, a house that could not be built today. Despite the architects being limited to the footprint of the original design, with careful planning and coordination with the Town’s Wetland board, they were able to construct the home that the owners had envisioned.
Clerestory windows and interior transoms allow the inhabitants to fully enjoy natural light and the dramatic seasonal changes of the surrounding woodland. The clean, modern design esthetic is softened by indigenous materials, namely, warm cedar shingles and topstone.

Nestled over the water, one can enjoy the most heavenly views whether it be sunrise or sunset. Working within the original footprint for this 70s home the entry was redesigned into a wall of glass, on both sides of the foyer. This enabled its occupants to enjoy the expansive green canopy, surrounding rock outcroppings, and the view of the lake beyond.
Transom windows let the light travel through the interior all day as the sun moves across the sky.
