Both a modern cabin in the woods and a cave-dwelling this compound was devised by Andersson-Wise Architects to nestle into its site of Jackson, Wyoming. The rammed earth walls of each structure are partially buried into the earth retain large areas of sloping grade and form the base level of the buildings.
The compound is called Camp Teton, a four-building mountaintop sanctuary showcasing sweeping views of the Teton Range, and its’ infamous peak, The Grand. The site also overlooks the awe-inspiring Snake River Valley. It’s this dramatic natural landscape that inspired the owners and project team to devise an incredible grouping of structures built with the beauty of Wyoming in mind.

Camp Teton’s design aesthetic is composed of elements that are centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The building materials were selected based upon this design choice.
Three of the four buildings are largely composed of rammed earth, a material achieved by compacting a damp mixture of subsoil that has suitable portions of sand, gravel, clay, and stabilizer, into a formwork.
Rammed earth, along with stained slab siding, exposed structural steel elements, reclaimed wooden timbers, and wall and ceiling paneling join to create an organic, simple, and intimate composition of materials that display an appreciation of the ingenuous integrity of natural objects and processes.
What We Love: This modern cabin in the woods offers places of privacy and togetherness, to enjoy both family gatherings and the great outdoors. When the weather is ideal, this home enjoys a wonderful indoor-outdoor connection with walls that raise and lower on a pulley system. We are loving the overall concept of these cabin structures and all of the beautiful design details that make this place a unique and one-of-a-kind — sanctuary in the mountains.
Tell Us: What do you think, would this be your idea of the ultimate cabin in the mountains?
