Step inside a designer’s modern farmhouse dream home in Michigan

modern farmhouse home exterior

Nestled on a woodsy property in Douglas, Michigan, this modern farmhouse home was built as a dream home for interior designer Beth Howley and her extended family. The association design guidelines give a nod to the farmhouses that sit on the sprawling apple orchards of Douglas and Saugatuck.

The dwelling features a large atrium that perfectly frames the surrounding trees. There are five bedrooms in this home, enough to host family and friends for long weekends of entertainment. Additional highlights include two fireplaces, a downstairs kitchenette, and an inviting screened-in porch.

Layered neutrals and a mix of metal and lighting throughout make this home bright and airy in the warmer months and warm and cozy during cold Michigan winters. It represents a dream realized and the perfect home base for the interior designer and her family.

Modern island lights from Modern Forms mix with the more traditional fixtures souced from Hudson Valley Lighting that are over the sink, adding contrast and interest. The vent hood over the range is by Thermador. The barstools are from Arteriors Home, while the flooring was sourced from Shaw Contract.

What We Love: This modern farmhouse was created as a dream home for a designer to entertain family and friends. Living spaces are warm and inviting with a harmonious flow throughout. We are loving the bright and airy living room with its soaring ceiling and cozy window seat next to the fireplace, perfect for the cold winter months. The screened porch is also a wonderful spot to lounge and retreat with guests throughout the seasons to enjoy an indoor-outdoor living experience.

Above: TVs in your living space are so fun to curl up and watch a movie by the fire, yet are not always aesthetically pleasing to look at. To address this, the designer wanted to keep the beautiful precast concrete fireplace by Hard Topix at eye level and the centerpiece of the great room. She opted to set the TV on an arm off to the side in a recessed cavity. When it’s not in use, it slips into the background to let this warm, quiet fireplace shine.

Blah. She did everything she learned on HGTV, and the house ends up looking as if no one lives there. No personality, no sense that anyone has ever stepped foot inside. Shelves filled with tchotchkes that look as though they’re scooped up at Wayfair because they have black or gold in them. It’s a lovely home and setting, but it just looks mass-produced to satisfy HGTV trends, and there are hundreds of thousands of similar homes across the country now that look just like it and will forever mark this period in time in design/build.

Huge beautiful spaces. Gorgeous rooms. Too many sharp corners and reliance on black for me though.

I think the house is very cold and sterile. Way too monochromatic for my taste. I like the living room window seat and the porch. Other than that, don’t care for it at all.
