Tate Studio Architects has designed this modern desert home for a music and art loving retired couple, located in Scottsdale, Arizona. This dwelling features three bedrooms and five-and-a-half bathrooms and includes an exercise room and an art studio. The architects sited this home to maximize the views and soak in the natural light along with creating as much privacy as possible.

The garage was set at the front of the residence to act as a buffer from the road along with a nearby house. Creating a sense of arrival, carefully placed stepping stones and cacti leads guests up to the front entry. The stepping stones are an integral color exposed aggregate concrete. The color of the concrete is Davis Graphite. The stucco is a synthetic top coat color matched to Dunn Edwards color DE6098 – Burns Cave.

Above: The element in the center of the structure is a 8 foot wide pivot door. 1/3rd of the door on the right hand side is stained bamboo and the 2/3rds on the left side of the door is sandblasted glass. The pattern that you see is sandblasted into the interior side of the glass. The pattern is visible because of the light transferred through the house at the entry stairs.

Above: On the floors is a porcelain tile from the Artech line manufactured by Reffin Ceramiche. The size is 12″ x 24″. The exterior tile is the same material except it has a slip resistant grooved texture for patio use. The sliding glass doors are the 3070 Fleetwood doors.

Above: The fireplace surround is a very large cast-in-place concrete wall with a natural form finish. The horizontal lines that seem to indicate tile are the impressions left by the plywood forms. The internal workings of the fireplace hood and flue are concealed within this cast-in-place feature. The hearth and the backing inside the fireplace are flamed basalt slab panels, custom fabricated by Specialty Fireplaces.

Above: This minimalist kitchen features Bulthaup Cabinets that are crafted by Bulthaup Scottsdale. Small details like the stainless-steel toe kicks and indirect lighting over the cabinets add interest to the space. The pendant lights and a cantilevered wood eating area complete the sleek space.
