A concrete and steel house channels agrarian aesthetics in Napa Valley

Kathryn Quinn Architects has designed this home inspired by the local vernacular of agrarian and industrial buildings, surrounded by a forest of oak trees in Calistoga, a small city in California’s Napa Valley. These styles would easily allow for a design that seemed as if it were added to over the course of time, with distinctly different roof and room shapes, depending on their function.

Created for a couple from Illinois, they immediately fell in love with this hillside property and its jaw-dropping vistas. They enjoyed the property and the pool house for quite some time before enlisting the architect to design the main house on site that would honor the bucolic setting.

The architect devised an L-shaped floor plan arranged around a central courtyard while employing building materials of wood and steel trusses, concrete, and galvanized steel that would create an industrial feel for the dwelling. The metal reinforces the idea that this is the type of building one would have historically found on this site.

Typically, additions to a building occur after a large span of time, during which products and product styles would change over the years. To achieve that look, the building is designed with two different windows – black aluminum and clear anodized aluminum.

What We Love: This agrarian style home is a collaborative work of art surround by the natural beauty of California wine country. Exposed corrugated steel walls provide an attractive exterior facade, while the interiors offer its occupants warm and inviting spaces for living and entertaining. We are especially loving the screened porch, a cozy respite for reading, enjoying breakfast, and entertaining while protected from the elements yet feeling immersed with nature.

When designing this home for the pair of empty nesters, the owners requested living spaces that could easily accommodate visits from their children and grandchildren. The home needed to be spacious yet they did not want to walk by a bunch of empty bedrooms when guests are not visiting.

To address this concern, the architect placed the main living spaces on the second level, and guest suites and a large living area on the first level. This way, children could play in the courtyard and run into the home, yet the owners could still have their privacy. The main bedroom suite is also located on the second level to take advantage of the natural light and magnificent views.

The interior furnishings consist of mostly contemporary items to complement the house, providing a contrast to the owner’s existing antiques that bring history to all the rooms. The home stands as a seamless transition between the old and the new.
