Dreamlife Design was commissioned to transform a spec home from ordinary to extraordinary — including an incredible backyard retreat, located in the Horse Hill neighborhood of Mill Valley, California. The owners of this stunning 4,000 square foot, four-bedroom, five-bath home entered into this project during the construction phase of what was originally a small bungalow.
The new owners, a family of four, saw the potential in this home’s design, which was focused on blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces. Nana doors were not yet integrated into the design, however, the home was framed out and one could see how beautifully it would all flow.

“I am thrilled they hired me to design the house with them from what I call studs-to-rugs. We started working together when the framing was raw and the space held a world of potential.” — Dreamlife Design.
Since the construction of this home was still in its infancy, the owners were able to select all of their own finishes and make changes to the design. One such example is a room that was originally slated to be a bedroom and small study. Instead, it was made into a kid’s media space, while the main level bathroom became an en-suite.
What We Love: This wonderful home offers a family a habitat that was designed to meet their lifestyle needs. A seamless indoor-outdoor connection creates harmony and makes entertaining a breeze. There is plenty of space for both relaxation and play, with comfortable interior spaces and outdoor entertainment zones. We are especially loving the backyard transformation, offering a retreat-like environment that is perfect for staycations!

Small changes were also made to the kitchen. The architects had originally envisioned an area for a TV room, which was instead turned into a home office. The TV instead placed on a wall above the great room’s two-way fireplace.
Above: When the family first moved into their home, this backyard oasis did not exist. Instead, it was more like a giant mud pit! They had a vision, which included a large swimming pool/spa, a patio for entertaining, and an expansive pergola. This enables light to filter in, yet keeps the area temperate throughout the day. There are also integrated heaters to keep the area warm after the sun goes down.

“The owners are an active, fun family who loves to entertain and enjoy their time relaxing and playing at home. Now they have the house and the expansive retreat-like landscape as their playground.” — Dreamlife Design
