Gaskill Architecture designed this modern timber frame house that terraces into the moraine landscaping, nestled into the woods sitting on eighteen acres in Portersville, Pennsylvania. Large rocks, ferns, and a diverse mixture of deciduous trees make up the landscape. The house was designed as a true blend of landscape and architecture.

As you approach the house, a 180’ bridge takes you through the woods to the front door. All of the topography on the site has been maintained as a strategy for the house positioning and design. The exterior consists of stone, corten metal siding, reclaimed torched barn siding, stained Douglas fir, and Marvin windows.

The rainwater is collected off of the two main roofs through a large custom corten metal gutter and the water flows into a rock swale that flows under the bridge. The house is inherently very sustainable including lots of daylighting and views, reclaimed siding, geothermal hvac, radiant floor heating, low V.O.C. materials a high-performance envelope.

This house is a great example of how nature truly influences a successful architectural design.

The interior materials consist of a large mixture of exterior materials that connect the indoors and outdoors. 

The great room of the house is a modern post and beam structure which creates a feeling as if you are in a tree house. The open floor plan promotes gathering in the house’s core and takes advantage of the view of the woodlands.

What We Love: This modern timber frame house provides a cozy and welcoming ambiance for both everyday living and hosting guests. Large walls of glazing provide a fabulous indoor-outdoor connection, inviting the beauty of the wooded landscape inside. There are so many fantastic details in this home, from the open and airy great room to the heavy use of wood for warmth to the spa-like bathroom with its woodsy views.
