Gorgeous Virginia lake house gets reimagined with industrial-modern vibe

modern-lake-house-exterior

Boasting a fantastic indoor-outdoor vibe, this stunning modern lake house designed by Rill Architects is nestled on Lake Thoreau in Reston, Virginia. This once dark, outdated, 1970s waterfront home was opened up and expanded into the open, airy space it is today. The hard-working elements of the home celebrate the beauty found in functional objects and materials.

Prior to the renovation, views to the lake were obstructed, while windows needed to be enhanced to capture those views. A compact galley kitchen had drywall partitions, while the dining room lacked views of the lake. Additional details that were dated included plywood stairs with carpeting. Be sure to have a look at the before images below!

The goal for the renovation was to open the spaces up and meld the home with its natural environment. Walls were torn down to create an open layout kitchen, dining, and living area. The kitchen was reconfigured and expanded into the former dining room. Working mostly within the existing footprint, the architect gained an additional 400 square feet of living space.

To achieve this, three areas were reconfigured. A deeply recessed entry was enclosed to create a more spacious foyer. To create an unimpeded link from front to back, all obstacles were removed, which also created space for the new dining area. Lastly, a portion of the courtyard that had awkwardly protruded into the interior was enclosed.

What We Love: This beautiful Virginia lake house offers the owners a newly revamped home that draws its inspiration from nature. A pared-down palette of black, white, and tan helps to focus attention on the waterfront views through expansive windows. Industrial and natural elements can be found throughout, with interior details that celebrate functional beauty. Antique and retro finds decorate the living spaces to create an aesthetically stunning home surrounded by tranquility.
