This striking light-filled home with contemporary details was designed by Olson Kundig Architects, located on a heavily wooded property in Iron River, Michigan. Set in Michiganโs Upper Peninsula this residence frames and accentuates its natural context, making nature its central focus.
The design reacts to the surrounding environment, merging the indoors with out, while producing composed views into the woods and towards the water. The material and color palette selection was inspired by the landscape.
The living, dining and kitchen were designed as an open layout to create a central gathering space. Custom furnishings were designed as standout features, including the dining and coffee table, steel wall cabinet, among others. This produces a seamless integration of architecture and interiors. A sculptural staircase showcases a custom chandelier that anchors the intersection of the two main axes.
Smooth concrete reflects color and light throughout this dwelling. Even during the winter months, the sun-warmed entry creates a comfortable transition between indoors and out. Cedar siding inset with an antique African mask contrasts beautifully with custom door pulls fashioned from bronze and leather.
What We Love: This striking light-filled home offers living spaces that are intimate yet visually connected, ideal for gathering with family and friends. Large windows invite nature inside while bathing the interiors with natural light. The gorgeous woodsy surroundings create a tranquil environment that promotes relaxation, one of our favorite features in this home. Elements of nature and wood accents helps to infuse warmth into the contemporary scheme.
