Quaint New England saltbox house with coastal charm on Nantucket Island

saltbox-house-exterior

This saltbox house was completely renovated by Peninsula Architects in collaboration with Donna Elle Design, nestled in the heart of historic downtown Nantucket, Massachusetts. Constructed in 1840, this classic saltbox was purchased by the owner who desired a renovation to make it more suitable to host large family gatherings and to accomodate overnight guests.

As the design evolved it became clear that a major structural reinforcement was required due to ill-informed plan revisions over the history of the house. While the construction team carefully removed interior finishes and reinforced the floors and roof, the design team reorganized the plan and designed interiors that were crafted in Ohio then shipped to the site and installed.

Project Team: Architecture: Peninsula Architects | Interior Design: Donna Elle Design | General Contractor: Robert Deuberry of Charter St Properties | Carpenter: Junior Froes

The result is a house that is mostly unchanged on the exterior, but totally revolutionized in how it lives and its level of interior finish.

What is a saltbox house? A traditional New England style dwelling featuring a long, pitched roof that slopes down to the back, generally a wooden frame house.

Love! Made my heart go piddy-pat. Your carpenter must have been a busy little boy. Whoever designed, cut, installed, sanded, caulked, primed and painted all of that, my hat’s off to you. The house is a marvelous piece of art!
