Cozy cabin retreat boasts net-zero energy in the Pacific Northwest

goCstudio is responsible for the design of this cozy cabin retreat consisting of two modest cabins, a new cabin and the renovation of an existing cabin, located on an island in Washington. These cabins are nestled into the natural landscape of this stunning property. This project called for the complete renovation of an existing cabin, with the addition of a compact sleeping cabin.

The project team was mindful of the environmental impact of these structures on the site, with the goal of energy-efficiency and net-zero in terms of energy use. A thirty-five-panel solar array was installed on the south-facing roof of the existing cabin, which provides electricity for both cabins.

Energy-efficiency also influenced the material selection for the structures. Both of the cabins are clad with locally milled Fir trees. This provided an excellent opportunity to explore ways of using the wood both for the exterior siding and interior wood cladding.

The exterior siding is a reverse board and batten system with varied vertical board widths. A nod to traditional siding methods, this provides the cabins with a clean, modern aesthetic. The dark stain selected for the exterior facade enables some of the natural red hues of the fir to come through while also enabling the structures to recede into the trees and shadows.

The interiors bring a lighter finish while using the same material. Wire brushed vertical fir planks are stained white, allowing the natural wood grain to come through. This allows for a fresh take on a traditional cabin interior.

The interior of this cabin was completely gutted and transformed to allow for a new communal living/dining/kitchen space. The wood rafters and roof decking were sand blasted to reveal their natural color and beauty.

The sleeping cabin features four bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms. The homeowners already had this unique bunk bed that the project team repurposed in this space for the kid’s bedroom.
