Sandbox Studio designed this incredible rustic lakefront mountain cabin retreat, located on Carnelian Bay, a community on the shore of Lake Tahoe, California. This 6,168 square foot lodge-like cabin fronts 200 feet of beachfront property. It is composed of some of the cabins that once housed athletes in the 1960 Winter Olympic Games at Squaw Valley. Harmonizing with its surroundings, this home takes advantage of lake views and the Sierra Nevada foothills from every room. Living spaces have been designed to accomodate small and intimate family gatherings as well as larger extended family. Reclaimed materials can be found throughout, sourcing from naval shipyards in California to barns in Pennsylvania and heavy timbers from British Columbia.

Outdoor activities are in abundance, making it difficult for guests to leave after spending a long day enjoying the lake. This home is equipped to handle plenty of overnight visitors, boasting five guest master bedroom suites. There are also several outdoor lounge areas, which includes an upper-level sun deck. There are also plenty of relaxing indoor spaces, such as a kids’ lounge area and a reading loft framing lakefront vistas.
What We Love: This lakefront mountain cabin boasts exquisite details both indoors and out. Although the material palette is rough, it is applied a way that brings sophistication to this rustic dwelling. This home’s rustic styling is evocative of old-world Lake Tahoe, loaded with warmth and comfort thanks to the furnishings, fixtures and accessories along with the reclaimed wood. Every detail throughout has been well planned and executed, creating a timeless aesthetic to enjoy for years to come… Readers, please share with us what your overall thoughts are on the design of this home in the Comments!
