Off the grid: A compact passive house design in Maine

Designed by Go Logic, this two-story passive house design features a 1,500 square foot bright and airy floor plan, with 238 square feet of covered deck, located in Belfast, Maine. There is a combined kitchen/living/dining space on the first level and three bedrooms with one full bath on the second level (floor plans below). Amenities include a covered entry porch, kitchen pantry, powder room, mud room, and laundry closet.

These energy-efficient homes are prefabricated in Go Home’s climate-controlled factory and then brought on-site to fully assemble. Their panelized exterior walls have “two thick layers of insulation,ย virtually eliminating thermal bridging from indoors to outdoors and dramatically reducing heat loss,” states the company website.

Other highlights includes: a patented super-insulated foundation, passive house building shell, high-performance windows and doors, tested air-tightness, continuous fresh-air ventilation, efficient and reliable systems and equipment, durable, low-maintenance exterior, clean and bright interiors, healthy living environmentโ€”such as Zero-VOC paints and formaldehyde-free cabinets and plywood.

Above:ย The track was made by Hafele, installed in the framing before drywall. The handle is from Linnea, and the door has several layers of painted tongue and groove pine. This is a standard washer with a spin dryer. The closet was designed to hang clothes for drying.

Above:ย The windows throughout this home are triple-paned with an average R-value of 7 (up to twice the R-value of commonly available windows). The windows shades are standard roll down solar control shades- 7% transparent. The floors are solid spruce, face nailed with a clear polyurethane finish. The window trim and all painted wood trim is eastern white pine.
