1700s Pennsylvania bank barn gets beautifully transformed into a guest house

bank barn exterior

Neely Architecture recently completed the transformation of a late 1700s Bank Barn into a Guest House/Pool House for a growing family, located in Elverson, Pennsylvania. The scope of work included the full renovation as well as the layout and planning for the outdoor area and pool. Continue below to see the before images.

Set a few hundred feet from a late-1700s stone farmhouse, the barn complements a primary residence that had previously been renovated and expanded by the architect for the same family. “What a delight it was to transform this old barn into an enchanting pool and guest house, states the architect.

The home’s custom windows and doors by Hope’s Windows were designed to create the ideal interior. With narrow sightlines that frame expansive views, they flood the space with natural light and seamlessly connect the indoors with the surrounding landscape. The product used is the Landmark175 Series with Thermal Evolution Technology.

The approximate square footage of the barn is 5,500 square feet. There is also an outdoor shed kitchen built from an existing stone structure in the outbuilding.

“Total construction time was approximately 21 months. We rebuilt almost everything, including the interior timber framing. The original stone walls and timber floor framing were left untouched other than repointing, ” states the architect.

Barns are wonderful warm structures but all the warmth and richness have been stripped from this one. Even the furnishings are cold.
It looks like they’re living in a factory.
