Studio Rick Joy has designed this modern farmhouse nestled on a 210-acre farm in the heart of the Green Mountains in Woodstock, Vermont. The Arizona-based architect specializes in desert modernist-style, yet he was able to create a harmonious stone-and-cedar gable farmhouse and barn.

The creation of the 3,890-square-foot structure and its adjacent barn was developed with the highest degree of craftsmanship and attention to detail, inspired by the local style and materials. The farmhouse is used as a family and recreation-oriented getaway that is able to accommodate many guests.

Besides the main structure, there is a large guesthouse to accommodate all these visitors. Thanks to materials used in construction and a carefully planned interior, the house becomes a great place to relax and forget about urban living.

Locally sourced materials, such as Lake Champlain bedrock and pine, were used for the construction of this dwelling.

The simple gabled forms use locally sourced materials — wood shingles in the barn and cut stone in the house. These materials combine with the clean lines and natural light to produce a subtle yet playful dappled effect on the structures’ surfaces in an architecture that both contrasts and articulates the rural landscape that surrounds it.

A modern steel frame, along with structural insulated panels, allowed for quick construction, while also providing for efficient insulation for Vermont’s four-season climate.

An unusual linear footage of stone walls that are 100-200 years old has been left untouched and still can be found throughout the property. The entrance to the main structure is through a cutout at one end of the 152-foot-long, cedar and stone dwelling.

What We Love: This Vermont modern farmhouse offers a unique home for family getaways surrounded by picturesque farmlands and a large pond. A beautiful material palette of stone and wood creates a natural aesthetic that is warm and inviting.
