Paul Robert Rousselle, together with TruexCullins Interiors, has designed this timeless mountain-contemporary getaway nestled in Stowe, a town in northern Vermont. This two-story residence serves as a weekend and vacation haven for a family with a deep love for Vermont. The homeowner wished for living spaces that were cozy and inviting yet large enough to entertain family and friends. Aside from the master bedroom suite, there also needed to be three guest bedrooms.
This 40-acre property is heavily forested, offering breathtaking views of the Worcester Range and more distant views of the mountains at Sugarbush Resort. The site was deeply sloped, allowing for the ground floor to be tucked into the hillside, hiding it from view on approach to the home. The overall feel of this home is classic yet contemporary — the shingle-style architecture gives the exterior a traditional look, while the interior features are more contemporary.

To create an intimate yet spacious feel, the three guest bedrooms and a family/entertainment room were allocated to the lower level. On the entry-level, an open layout kitchen, dining room and great room are placed at the heart of this home. The master bedroom suite is also located on this level.
With the lower level built into the hillside, this home is perceived as being smaller in scale. With the cleverly design floor plan layout, the homeowner can visit this home alone and have everything they need on one level. When guests are visiting, everyone has their privacy.
To further reduce the scale of this home, the owner’s bedroom, mudroom/breezeway, the garage, and the porch were all placed at angles. Varying rooflines also helped to make the dwelling appear less vast.

This mountain-contemporary getaway, with classic shingle-style architecture mixed with contemporary elements, is stunning both indoors and out. We are just loving the beauty that surrounds this home; there is so much privacy and beautiful views- a haven of relaxation. With respect to the environment, the design team worked closely with the homeowner to select warm-hued, natural materials. The light color palette helps not to detract from the natural beauty surrounding this home. The varieties of wood and stone merge seamlessly on the floors and walls — white oak flooring has been used throughout. Many of the furnishings were custom-designed by the interiors team and crafted by local artisans.
