Kevin Browne Architecture has designed this beautiful, modern, contemporary retreat situated on the greens of a golf course in Falmouth, Maine. Nestled on a wooded site, this project began with the replacement of the former structure that was lost in a fire. The owners are a married couple who run a local Japanese restaurant and desired a place to relax after a long night on their feet.
The floor plan is spread out over two levels, along with some additional living space in a walk-out basement. Open and airy, the main level features a double-volume entry with a dramatic staircase crafted of Douglas fir wood and cables, serving as a defining focal point of the residence. This level includes a spacious kitchen, dining room, and sitting room, along with a guest suite that encompasses a cozy sitting area, two bedrooms, and a shared bathroom.

Designed with modernity in mind, the home’s exterior facade combines fiber cement and vertical white cedar siding, complemented by a standing seam metal roof. White cedar highlights the entryway to break up the length of the house while also serving as the “knuckle” connecting the two angles of each wing of the house.
The greatest challenge of this project was designing the owners’ dream home within the footprint of the house that previously stood in its place, which likely had a completely different program. The architects found a great deal of joy in bringing new life to this property.
What We Love: This home offers stunning curb appeal thanks to the mix of materials, interesting rooflines, and angled wings. We love how well the stair and entry sequence beautifully unify the two sides of the house, creating a seamless flow that enhances both functionality and aesthetics. Overall, we think the architects did a fabulous job of creating a dream house for the owners that promotes relaxation at the end of a long day.

The second level of the house offers the perfect balance of shared and private spaces, featuring a spacious living area and a luxurious owner’s bedroom suite. This includes a large walk-in closet, a private balcony, and a dual-sided gas fireplace that is positioned between the bedroom and bathroom, offering cozy views from both the bed and the tub.
