SALA Architects, in collaboration with Lucy Interior Design, crafted this stunning lakeside family retreat, which sits on the shores of Lake Huron in Desbarats, Ontario, a setting of extraordinary natural beauty on the world’s longest freshwater shoreline.
Constructed on the original footprint of a previous structure, this lakeside haven re-emerges as a quietly spectacular retreat for family and friends. With the assistance of a 23-foot folding door, the assembled activities of the soaring great room – cooking, dining, and living – flow seamlessly outward onto the screened porch and down to the shore below. Continue below to see the rest of this inspiring lake house getaway…

The Exterior & Arrival

Above: Perched on a peninsula and surrounded by deciduous and fir trees, the cottage’s metal roof and Douglas fir-clad exterior blend with the wooded shoreline landscape. The architect tucked a decorative “rising sun” detail under the roofline, a modern, arrow-like interpretation of a traditional gable ornament that gives the home a quietly distinctive character from the water.

What We Love About This House
This lakeside family retreat offers its inhabitants a warm and inviting getaway to spend quality time with loved ones. Nestled right on the water, idyllic views through large windows create a feeling of tranquility. We are especially loving the screened porch, the perfect spot to lounge while enjoying indoor-outdoor living. We think this would be a fantastic getaway to enjoy with family and friends. How about you?

The 23-foot NanaWall folding door system opens the entire living space to the screened porch and the Lake Huron shoreline beyond, making indoor-outdoor living completely effortless. A Moroccan rug, vintage accent chairs, and Lucy Interior Design’s custom coffee table bring personality and warmth to the space.
