Perched on a coastal bluff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean in  Truro, Massachusetts, this new midcentury-inspired house by Hammer Architects is also designed to offer views of the Pamet River and a freshwater pond. The homeowners are a couple of empty nesters who wanted to build their dream home on an idyllic property surrounded by woods, maximizing water views — all public rooms and bedrooms take advantage of the vistas.

As avid collectors of vintage Danish furniture, they wanted their house to feature their furniture collection. The entry side of the 2,900-square-foot home appears very solid, with its thick, super-insulated, wood-clad walls and narrow strip windows that enclose the bathrooms, outdoor showers, stairs, and laundry room.

Little is revealed until one enters the house through a tall glass door that appears as one approaches. Once inside, the living and dining rooms, which occupy the building’s center, open to dramatic water views through a floor-to-ceiling glass wall with large sliding doors leading to a multi-level outdoor deck.

What We Love About This Home

New England isn’t exactly known for its midcentury modern architecture, which makes this Truro home all the more remarkable. The architects did a beautiful job of creating a warm and welcoming mid-century home that made an empty-nest couple’s dream come true. The Douglas fir ceiling and mahogany-framed windows give the open great room a depth and warmth that draws you in, while the floor-to-ceiling glazing keeps the Atlantic, the Pamet River, and the surrounding pitch pine forest ever-present.
