This stunning camp-inspired home offers a sanctuary on Decatur Island

The architectural studio of Hoedemaker Pfeiffer is responsible for the design of this family refuge perched on a hillside on Decatur Island in Washington’s San Juan Islands.

This secluded cabin retreat was designed for a family by architects Hoedemaker Pfeiffer, located on Decatur Island, one of the San Juan Islands in Washington state. Working with a site that had been partially ravaged by logging, the team worked to create both buildings and the site.

The retreat is based on the idea of camp and with a desire to encourage engaging nature the bedrooms were separated from the main house. A series of buildings from the writer’s cottage, master bedroom cottage, main house, guest house, and pavilion stretch out across a level stretch of topography. A barn and garden anchor the site from above.

What We Love: This secluded cabin retreat on Decatur Island provides spaces where everyone can come together as a family while also being able to retreat to small personal spaces. Smaller spaces are connected by a pathway, taking advantage of the tranquil setting of nature. We are especially loving the writer’s retreat, a space to get inspired while enjoying breathtaking views of the surroundings.

Tell Us: What do you think of the design of this family cabin? Would this be your idea of the ultimate place to gather with family and friends? Let us know in the Comments!

Love it! Yes, the beams could have been sized down a bit. But I love the chunkiness of the whole cabin!

The patio beams are too thick for the size of the patio facade. Reminds me of that Pizzaro joke with the Chihuahua head on the St. Bernard body.
