This contemporary craftsman home gets a brilliant refresh in Massachusetts

The cabinets are painted in Benjamin Moore HC-155 Newburyport Blue. The backsplash tile is from Sonoma Tilemakers, “Stellar Hex”, and the color is Alpine Snow. It’s ceramic, and 3.25″ with Laticrete 91 Slate Grey grout.

Eleven Interiors has refreshed this contemporary craftsman home in Dedham, Massachusetts, creating living spaces that feel more relaxed and inviting. The homeowner had purchased this 3,400-square-foot spec home that features great bones, a great layout, and generously proportioned spaces, yet some big details felt too “suburban” to him.

The homeowner requested: a complete overhaul of the powder room; that the white kitchen be “more inviting and exciting”; that the wall paneling surrounding the TV in the living room be warmer and “more unusual”; that the office have a window bench seat for his dog; that the master suite be warmer and more connected to the conservation land outside the windows.

A new glass door refrigerator was panelized to match the existing cabinetry.

The designer had to wire for many new ceiling-mounted light fixtures (dining room, living room, home office, entry, powder room, kitchen, and master bedroom) which remarkably weren’t included in the original build; this required removing portions of the coffered ceiling in the office and making adjustments for structural beams that lay on the exact location for several of these pendants.

A new kitchen island was designed to better suit the homeowner’s needs and ensure that it fit exactly to the current island dimensions because they could not refinish all of the new and very costly flooring. Building a slightly larger island created a pinch point and couldn’t accommodate a single slab with no seams. The owner wanted a seamless island countertop in stone with a 2” thick apron-it took 9 men to transport/transfer and lift it into place!

Above: For the custom living room paneling on the TV wall, the proportions needed to scale with the vaulted ceiling space. All of the electrical outlets and switches had to be hidden within the panels or moved. The new gas fireplace required additional venting.

Above: The wood accent wall is natural ash. Flat panels about 4’-0” wide were fabricated and the ash slats are attached to the panels. The panels are installed next to each other and the seams are hidden by the depth of the slats. The panels are attached to the wall using Z-clips.
