Inside a Newport Beach farmhouse with a cool California vibe

This chic farmhouse style home was designed by Eric Olsen Design in collaboration with Raili CA Design, located in Newport Beach, California. Designed for a couple with three young children, this family home features light-filled, playful interiors. The homeowners requested a look with loads of personality, touches of whimsy and unique touches – not your traditional Newport style.

This newly built home reflects a modern design with a quintessential California lifestyle of indoor-outdoor living. On the exterior, you will find a single story facade on the front, extending to a double story on the rear. A gable roof, painted wood siding, rustic Texas limestone and burnished stucco makes up the materials of the facade. On the interiors, living spaces feel really open thanks to high ceilings and expansive windows.

The homeowners requested a plan that would allow for a harmonious flow with a clear line of sight and an airy feel. The project team created an L-shaped layout that allowed for open connections and helped to direct movement throughout the interiors. On the main level you will find the common living areas as well as the three children’s bedrooms. On the upper level is the master bedroom suite.

There is a physical and visual connection to the yard and swimming pool from almost every room in this home. To create this connection, the floor plan called for the living/dining/kitchen area to be on one side of the L-shape, while the playroom is on the other. These spaces open to the outdoors via pocketing doors, blurring indoor-outdoor lines.

In the living area, the street side features French doors that opens out onto a patio. When both sets of doors are open, the space is flooded with natural light. The designer took advantage of this lightness, painting the kitchen cabinetry in a deep navy blue. In a darker room, this rich color would appear moody, but in a light-filled space, it feels more comfortable.
