BCA Interiors undertook a remarkable transformation of this 16th-century country farmhouse, situated in the picturesque La Garrotxa region of the Catalan province of Girona, Spain. Surrounded by a beautiful rural setting, the original house had fallen into a state of disrepair — proving to be an extensive and thrilling project for all involved.
The property’s owners who live nearby, envisioned renovating and adapting this charming home into a second residence. Great teamwork, including local artisans and craftsmen, contributed to the project being on time and on budget. Continue below to see the rest of this fabulous home tour…
DESIGN OBJECTIVES
The project team adjusted the openings and entrances of this country house to meet the lifestyle needs of its inhabitants. They meticulously rejuvenated the facades using locally sourced stone and re-crafted the roofs in a traditional manner. Internally, they reconfigured the layout, resulting in two distinct zones.
The ground floor now encompasses all the welcoming and communal areas, while the first floor is a more private space, housing the bedrooms and bathrooms. Notably, the first floor features a fabulous covered porch that offers breathtaking views of the Catalan countryside.
The designer opted for locally sourced materials, including:
- Handcrafted tuff floors, sourced from a nearby factory.
- Repurposed oak barrels transformed into wooden parquet.
- Clay bathroom tiles adorned with natural enamels.
The project team integrated alternative energy sources such as geothermal energy and solar panels to provide radiant heating and hot water for sanitation.
What We Love: This 16th-century farmhouse offers its occupants a beautifully transformed home for family retreats.
