This modern farmhouse retreat was renovated by Kimmel Studio Architects together with Lynbrook of Annapolis, nestled within a serene 14-acre property in Queensland, Maryland. Highlights in this waterfront refuge include beautiful surroundings, minimal architectural features, and folding glass doors that seamlessly connect the interior with the exterior.
When a Baltimore family of four went searching for a year-round getaway, they were immediately drawn to the lush green fields, surrounding woodlands, and the sparkling waters of the Wye River afforded by this property. Undeterred by the dilapidated structure at the center of the site, the homeowners resolutely chose to acquire the property and transform it into the perfect year-round retreat for their family and friends.
The primary design challenge was to create a home that would fulfill the large square footage requirements and ensure that it seamlessly blended with the natural surroundings and maximize views of the landscape. Located on a rotating crop farm field inspired the architects to draw from the local farm buildings and traditional house forms of the Maryland Tidewater region.
To break down the massing and create an open and airy feel, they created a layout with interconnected smaller structures joined by glass connectors and circulation spines. Parts of the house embrace the essence of a classic farmhouse (main public entry space) or tobacco barn (kitchen), while others are simple structures with more modern aesthetics.

What We Love: This modern farmhouse in Maryland boasts stunning waterfront views thanks to expansive walls of glazing and folding glass doors to blur indoor-outdoor boundaries. We are loving the overall concept of this home, a large space for extended family to gather and make lasting memories. The serene property and the river add to the general feeling of relaxation that this getaway house provides to its inhabitants.
