An amazing glass-box retreat on the rocky shores of Lake Superior

Snow Kreilich Architects has designed this modern glass-box retreat that is perched on a rocky terrain overlooking Lake Superior in Marquette, Michigan. Adjacent to the owner’s family retreat, the land was purchased to enhance their tie to this special place and spectacular landscape. The desire for single-level living and specific views toward two coves and the expansive Lake Superior horizon drove the “X” concept.

Two intersecting bars begin on grade and end elevated above the site, cantilevering toward the water and into the largely pine forest. One section encompasses the living room, kitchen, and garage, while the other hosts the bedrooms and bathrooms. Since the plan is devised on a single level, it can easily be navigated by its aging inhabitants (the owners are a multi-generational family).

The region’s intense winter climate required a robust structural system of exposed concrete piers, steel framing, and cantilevered engineered lumber. A simple materials palette; stone, blackened wood, and glass, echo the region’s unique natural and industrial heritage.

The X House itself is a contradiction: it is a necessarily robust and protective legacy structure for the family, yet imbues the rituals of everyday life with the beauty of this powerful place. Overall, this dwelling contains 3,955 square feet of living space.

What We Love: This glass-box retreat provides its occupants with a modern dwelling immersed in its magnificent shoreline environment. The asymmetrical “X” design enables this home to fit into the context of its site while also maximizing lakeshore views and the beach coves on either side of the outcropping. We are especially loving how the muted exterior material palette of stone, blackened wood, and glass—helps meld the structure into the woods.
