This spectacular desert modern home designed by Studio Upwall is set amidst the beauty of the desert landscape and is surrounded by panoramic views in Moab, Utah. After purchasing this magnificent property, the homeowners sought to construct a unique, comfortable, and modern home.
The project team employed materials that could withstand the extreme desert temperatures — from freezing snow to 100 degree scorching Summers. On the exterior facade, you will find an aged metal roof and siding, as well as wood and stucco that will age and patina over time.

What We Love: The architects did a fabulous job of siting this desert modern home on the property to maximize views while taking advantage of the sun’s path. On the exterior facade, the material selection of steel and weathered wood helps this home to meld with its majestic surroundings — the red-orange sandstone cliffs. Concrete floors run continuously from indoors to outdoors to create a sense of continuity from inside to outside. Overall, this home is unique, inviting, and respects its surrounding natural environment.

Sustainable Features:
- Natural day-lighting, natural ventilation, radiant floor heating, and passive solar design.
The southern wall is set in under the deep overhang of the roof that provides shade in the hottest months and is punctuated with a series of glass doors and windows that open onto the natural desert landscape.
The garage structure is designed in a similar volume as the main house and was clad in the same patina steel panels.
The interiors were designed to be clean and simple, yet cozy and inviting. The radiant concrete floors provide an abundance of heat, and the double volume glazing frames picturesque views of the surrounding red-rock cliffs.
The orientation of the house on the site aligns with the sun’s path. The common living, cooking, and dining space of the house is located within this volume, allowing occupants to experience the sunlight as it moves through the space throughout the day. The windows within this space are designed to provide a connection to the landscape and the distant panoramic views.
The dining space features Gubi dining chairs and a Noguchi pendant. All of the interior doors are painted in Sherman Williams Bold Brick to add a pop of color. Inspired by the surrounding landscape, the design team selected a neutral color palette and materials that seemed natural to the desert.
There is a hidden loft set at the top of the volume accessed by a simple ladder that provides an ideal space for reading and reflection.
The bedrooms and bathrooms are all aligned along the lower north side of the house that has smaller horizontal windows to create view portals while retaining a sense of intimacy and privacy.
