Izen Architecture recently completed the design of a two-story, 600-square-foot rear addition onto this narrow home in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It contains a new home theatre in the basement, a new living room on the ground floor, which is stepped down from the rest of the space to achieve higher ceilings, and a new master suite above with a walk-in closet and ensuite.
Soon after moving in, one of the home-owners approached us to design modern Christmas decorations for the entire house, inside and out, as a surprise for her husband, and our hearts melted at the prospect of being involved in such a thoughtful, generous Christmas gift. We enlisted the help of two of our favorite holiday-décor experts, Ann Marie Favot and Stacey Begg, and allowed ourselves to be swept away in the magic of the holidays.
We designed the theme for all décor using a palette of millennial pink, green, and chartreuse, pulling from some of the accent furniture in the home as well as the homeowners’ colorful art collection. The white exterior was covered with all-white modern Christmas lights, and a garland wrapped around the front porch railing sets the tone for entering the house. In addition, we designed a large, picture window at the front of the house, which perfectly frames the feature tree – a large, real Christmas tree adorned in the homeowners’ own collection of food-related ornaments.
There are decorative holiday elements in every room of the house. A bowl of ornaments sits as the centerpiece for the dining room table, ornaments hang by the window in front of the kitchen sink, gold-tipped pinecones are sprinkled throughout, and a wreath is mounted onto the marble stove hood.
In the master bedroom, the décor follows the design principles of the vaulted space. Everything within is deeply textured but white. White brick on the tall fireplace, white wood paneling on the ceiling, white textured wallpaper behind the bed and a plush, white rug. To add to the modern, snowy vibe we sourced an all-white tree and knitted white stockings. The tree is covered in white and silver ornaments, adding to the overall modern Christmas theme.
