Cozy rustic cabin perched on cliff overlooking Colorado’s mountains

rustic-cabin-exterior

Set on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Sangre de Cristo mountains in Fairplay, Colorado is this cozy rustic cabin designed by Renée del Gaudio Architecture. Nestled on the one-acre property is a pair of cabins, reminiscent of the regions’s early vernacular of gabled roofs and rustic materials. Cladding the exterior facade is cedar siding, stained dark to blend the structure with the surrounding forest. On the interior of this 2,100 square foot, three bedroom, two bathroom home are plywood walls and ceilings. These material selections help to keep the cabin low-key and rustic.

Expansive walls of glass helps to visually connect the home’s inhabitants with the magnificent rugged landscape beyond. This cabin was designed as a place for family gatherings, to rest after a long day of nature walks and to get warm in front of the fire on a cool evening. It tells a story of the inhabitants who dwell inside. It’s built with the character and sensation of a traditional cabin — yet set within a modern framework.

Natural daylight and ventilation permeate through all sides of the cabin. Electric appliances, LED lighting, and closed cell foam insulation helps to keep energy consumption to a minimum. Heating is provided with a 96-percent efficiency boiler, radiant floor tubing set in a concrete slab, and a high-efficiency wood burning stove. The structure is pre-wired for a 3kw photovoltaic array, which supplies 100-percent of the cabin’s electricity.

The setting on a rugged rocky cliff is beautiful, and it really blends in well with the landscape. I was impressed that it was so attractive and simple inside. Nice design, I love it.

I love the simple, downsized floor plan of this cabin! With or without the guest cabin, this looks like an affordable option for us that can be customized to our wooded setting with a view of our pond!
