This project features a modern take on a traditional style home designed for a family of five by Von Fitz Design, located in Los Angeles, California. The residence encompasses 5,400 square feet of living space with five bedrooms and five bathrooms. This home is a blending of styles —he likes modern, she likes traditional — the overall design reflects the best elements of both their styles. The design also need to be family-friendly, with durable materials and finishes with functionality for this active family. The overall aesthetics is comfy and traditional yet with an open and airy layout.
The family purchased this home with the idea that they would remodel it to cater to their lifestyle needs. In order to meet this needs, the design team ended up doing a full gut renovation, with only one wall left up during the construction phase. The project team created a design with a traditional aesthetic, integrating clean, modern lines with motifs — x-shaped elements such as the garage doors pictured above, plenty of white paint peppered by blue-black details.

What We Love: This is a stunning traditional style home using modern elements to make it very livable, functional, and inspirational. A great open floor plan that is very ideal for family living. This home has comfortable transitions to the beautiful outdoor spaces… well thought out layout. We are especially loving the kitchen — the beautiful pantry with its sliding barn door. The kitchen has fantastic accessibility, storage, design… the pass-through to the patio!!

The vintage pendant lights illuminating the island were once terra-cotta in color and were refurbished by the design team. Above the sink is a 9-foot-long window that passes through to the outdoor patio. Behind the kitchen table is a gallery wall featuring IKEA picture frames filled with the kids artwork, which can easily be switched out. The table was custom designed, while the chairs were vintage — refurbished and covered in a blue-black Naugahyde.

The sideboard is a built-in, custom-made for this space. The teak table and chairs were treasured items of the homeowners. The chairs were re-covered in a durable Sunbrella fabric.

The custom window (cut-to-size pocket door) was designed by Von Fitz and engineered by the genius of A-1 Construction.
