Modern pad with dramatic indoor-outdoor connection on the French Riviera

residence-modern-exterior

This modern residence was designed by SAOTA Architects, located in Saint-Tropez, a coastal town on the French Riviera, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region of southeastern France. The location inspired the seamless indoor-outdoor design of this home, nestled just above the beach of Plage de Pampelonne. Continue the home tour below to get all the details of this home as provided by the architects!

The garden side of the property was designed to integrate around a raised living and dining area, while a slanted embankment of lush vegetation leads to a swimming pool and sun bathing terrace. Further enhancing the outdoor experience is a pavilion featuring an outdoor lounge and cocktail bar. A surrounding pine forest affords the homeowners plenty of privacy, while providing the ideal backdrop for a boule court set amongst the trees.

The design of this home reflects a modern interpretation of the St Tropez lifestyle. “The contemporary, rectilinear, cubic design was carefully considered to blend in with the more traditional residences that are prevalent in the area,” states the architects. “A series of horizontal planes defines the design of this home – the green hedge on street level, the solid street facing front of the house, the indoor layers running from east to west, the linear terrace and sloping green embankment and swimming pool below.”

Throughout the house, there is an interplay of solid walls and large openings, which was created by floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding doors opening into pockets. The second level of this residence features individual elements unified by a horizontal eyebrow, which links them while framing an outdoor garden courtyard.

Palm trees were planted at the front of the home to not only lend a tropical feel, but to serve as a sculptural feature. The exterior facade presents an eye-catching display of travertine slabbed rectilinear panels with matching textured plaster planes as contemporary interpretation of the characteristic St Tropez stucco finish.

Thin horizontal and vertical openings punctuate the facade to bring in natural light while still allowing for privacy. Travertine stepping stones leads visitors to a double height, solid wood front door.

The homeowner decorated the interiors independently, selecting a neutral color palette with natural, organic materials. Timber and glass was selected for the furnishings, while accents of charcoal were used to add drama. Designer pieces such as Minotti and Patricia Urquiola can be found throughout.
