Perched high on a hilltop highlighting gorgeous water views, this contemporary seaside home was designed by Bates Masi Architects, located in Montauk, New York. Originally this property was utilized as a horse ranch, while the dwelling was designed to reflect the ‘Spirit of Montauk’. Beautiful rolling green pastures surrounds this home, which is terraced on a steeply sloping hillside. From the exterior of this sumptuous 7,000 square foot residence, the home appears to be two modest and separate one-story ranches—yet is connected by a cedar screen covered bridge. This helps to unify the two shingle-clad structures.
The house is characterized by a casual, understated vibe of Montauk, with its use of weather-beaten materials and design. The house is a combination of Western Red Cedar shakes and White Oak ship lap boards.
There is not a set circulation path in this home, as it encourages various encounters, similar to that of the social experiences in Montauk. Access points in this dwelling includes: underneath the bridge and up the terraced planter steps, which unveils the rolling hills and Atlantic Ocean beyond.
One can also gain entry by climbing the outdoor staircase which mirrors the interior stair, divided by a wall of glass. From here, you can enter into the home or continue through to the outdoor fireplace, dining area and beyond to the swimming pool. Exploring this home through its varying circulation paths creates varying memorable experiences for all who come to visit this spectacular dwelling.
