Astounding tropical modern retreat perched over Mexico’s Pacific Coast

Designed as a holiday home by Zozaya Arquitectos, this tropical modern retreat is located in Zihuatanejo, a resort city on Mexico’s Pacific Coast. Perched high above a picturesque tourist town of white sandy beaches with a laid-back vibe. Stepping down the steeply sloping site, this home was designed to capitalize on the views.

The main concept of this sprawling 5,059 square foot home was to create minimalist living with social spaces for family and friends to gather, relax and enjoy the views and impeccable weather. An opening in the property wall reveals a few steps leading down into the front yard.

A natural stone wall helps to conceal the property from the street, where only the master suite, which is perched above the rest of the dwelling, is revealed. A trio of narrow volumes is vertically stacked to offer inhabitants optimal views of the Pacific Ocean below. A concrete slab wraps the upper volume. Heat gain is reduced with insulation on the interior and a reflective paint on the outer surface.

An exterior staircase leads to the guest bedrooms, one level down. There are two suites on this level, each featuring an en-suite bathroom and small terrace with an ocean view.

What We Love: This tropical modern retreat offers its inhabitants a wonderful indoor-outdoor living experience with jaw-dropping views of the Pacific Ocean. Minimally designed interiors focus attention on the view outside while keeping living spaces feeling light and airy. We are especially loving how the bedrooms have private terraces and the incredible swimming pool that feels like it melds into the Pacific Ocean.

“A beautiful mix of materials and local construction techniques brings a strong modern and tropical personality to this home,” states the architects. This helps this home to successfully adapt to its surroundings while being in harmony with nature.

An open concept living, kitchen, and dining area opens out to a terrace that provides sweeping waterfront vistas. An infinity-edge pool creates the illusion of a continuous body of water just outside the dwelling.

To bring natural light into this home, the architect constructed two glazed openings — one on the street facade and the other facing the ocean. To enhance privacy, street-facing windows are fronted with a tight lattice of bamboo slats, filtering light with irregular patterns.

A concrete staircase brings the inhabitants of this home from the living area up to the master bedroom, which is the highest point of the home. “This space frames the view while creating the sensation of flying in the air due to the altitude,” said the architects.

Black steel canopies provide support to bamboo lattices offering shelter to certain areas of the home. This includes the exterior staircase at the rear of the dwelling, the kitchen area, and a part of the terrace at the front.

Magical. Zen use of materials. space, and light in a relatively small tight footprint. Would have loved to have seen the living floor plan instead of the master suite twice.

Lovely. But I would be worried about drug lords invading my space.

Amazing home. The views have to be some of the best anywhere. The indoor/outdoor living is really well done here.
